What determines candidacy

Your surgeon considers the donor area, treatment area, circulation, skin and tissue quality, medical history, smoking or nicotine use, medications, prior surgery, and the amount of change desired. You also need enough suitable donor fat.

Some transferred fat does not survive. Swelling can temporarily obscure the final contour, and the lasting volume may take months to judge. Weight change can affect both donor and treated areas.

Risks deserve plain language

Possible complications include bleeding, infection, fluid collection, fat necrosis, oil cysts, calcification, asymmetry, contour irregularity, scarring, loss of transferred volume, anesthesia complications, and need for revision. Risks vary by treatment site. Gluteal fat grafting carries distinctive, potentially fatal risks and requires strict safety practices by a qualified surgeon in an appropriate facility.
